Wes Anderson Returns to Cannes with The Phoenician Scheme

At the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Wes Anderson returned to competition with The Phoenician Scheme, premiering on May 18, 2025.
The film, an espionage black comedy, follows a powerful businessman played by Benicio del Toro, who reconnects with his estranged daughter, portrayed by Mia Threapleton, after surviving multiple assassination attempts. Blending family tension with political intrigue, the story explores themes of legacy, control, and vulnerability.

True to Anderson’s style, the film features a refined visual language—symmetry, controlled color palettes, and meticulous staging—while introducing a darker, more complex tone.

The premiere drew strong attention on the Croisette, with a notable red carpet presence and immediate industry buzz. Critics highlighted the performances, particularly Threapleton’s, and the film’s subtle shift toward a more serious narrative direction.

As one of the most anticipated entries in the 2025 lineup, The Phoenician Scheme reaffirmed Anderson’s place among contemporary auteur filmmakers and contributed to the festival’s ongoing dialogue between cinema, aesthetics, and culture.
